Corduroy fabric is a popular choice for making trousers, coats, jackets and upholstery, as it’s thicker and typically warmer. Needlecord fabric is often used for dressmaking or shirtmaking as it’s a finer fabric with a better “hang”. What does wale mean when describing corduroy fabric?

Wale refers to the vertical ridges or grooves that are the key identifying feature of corduroy fabric. It is also a measure of the number of ridges per inch of fabric. Lower wale numbers indicate wider, chunkier ridges, while higher wale numbers result in finer, more delicate ridges. For example, a 14-wale corduroy is finer and smoother than an 8-wale corduroy, which has more pronounced ridges.
