High-Quality Corduroy Fabric By The Metre

Corduroy material has a distinctive texture, appearing both cosy and luxurious. Its defining features are the raised vertical ridges, known as wales, that run the surface of the fabric. Corduroy fabric is soft to the touch and often has a sheen, giving it a rich and velvety look.

With corduroy fabrics, you can craft beautiful thick trousers, coats, and sweaters — looking both dressed up and comfortable at the same time. This fabric is also ideal for upholstery projects, including cushions, pillows, headboards, sofas, chairs and footstools.

Corduroy Fabric vs. Needlecord Fabric - What Works Best?

One of corduroy’s key features is the thick vertical ridges, or wales, that run the length of the fabric. And what separates corduroy fabric from needlecord fabric, is the number of wales per inch, typically corduroy has 11-14 wales per inch and is a thicker fabric, whereas needlecord fabric has 14-18 wales per inch and is thinner.

Corduroy fabric is a popular choice for making trousers, coats, jackets and upholstery, as it’s thicker and typically warmer. Needlecord fabric is often used for dressmaking or shirtmaking as it’s a finer fabric with a better “hang”. Make sure to read the product descriptions closely to choose the thickness that you feel is right for your project.

Corduroy Fabric FAQs

What is needlecord fabric?

Needlecord is a type of corduroy fabric characterized by its fine, narrow ridges (or wales). It is softer and lighter than standard corduroy, making it ideal for delicate applications like shirts, dresses, or lightweight upholstery.

How do you clean corduroy fabric?

To clean corduroy fabric, follow these steps:

    1. Check the Care Label: Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions first.
    2. Gentle Washing: Use a gentle washing machine cycle or hand wash in lukewarm or cold water with mild detergent.
    3. Avoid Overloading: Wash corduroy separately or with similar fabrics to prevent the ridges from matting.
    4. Drying: Air dry flat or tumble dry on a low heat setting to preserve the fabric’s texture. Avoid high heat.
    5. Brushing: After washing, use a soft brush to gently lift and restore the fabric's ridges if they appear flattened.

What does wale mean when describing corduroy fabric?

Wale refers to the vertical ridges or grooves that are the key identifying feature of corduroy fabric. It is also a measure of the number of ridges per inch of fabric. Lower wale numbers indicate wider, chunkier ridges, while higher wale numbers result in finer, more delicate ridges. For example, a 14-wale corduroy is finer and smoother than an 8-wale corduroy, which has more pronounced ridges.
